Værøy hiking in Lofoten

Finally me and puppy was on on our way with the ferry to wonderful Værøy island again. I did the longer hike to Måstad and Måhornet last year in a not so nice weather (yes, it happens to us all) and wanted to do it again … but both Håen, Hornet and Nupen hikes was very tempting today, so me and puppy went for them all – with no regrets!I

View from Håen – No my dear, we will not follow the trail that continues downwards over there
My dog Jenta like views like this too – wondering if those tiny moving spots down there is huntable

I usually have some kind of plan, but keeps it open for changes depending on circumstances. This day it was the sun, it’s position and the heat. I need to take care about my furry dog’s health in the heat, so I chose to first hike up to Håen, hike along Håheia and the scenic ridge with the sun in our back, and then ascend Hornet before a descent to the parking place. All with that lovely breeze in our fur.

HORNET

It was necessary to be up in the height to get some comfortable breeze from the ocean, to rest whenever we found a shadow and drink a lot of water.
Scenic views alright… it was a true pleasure to hike along this ridge from Håen to Hornet (in the middle)
The peak of Hornet is waiting…we will hike up along the trail that follows the edge
Holding my dog, some times she is just too curious for my faint of heart for hights, but I have to deal with it
Looking down on the trail and Nato-veien road up towards Håen and Håheia
Awesome views from Hornet towards Gjerdheia and Hamrane.
And a steep view down to Nordlandshagen and the old air port

Once again we met lovely hiking fellows that make our day just a bit brighter than expected, I am always thankful for those meetings, to continue hiking with a big smile in our face.

BREIVIKNUPEN

Back in the car me and puppy had lunch, rested in the shadows and drove to Breivika to hike up to Nupen in the comfortable afternoon shadow. The fog came in while we ascended along the ridge, but fortunately it was just temporary, so we continued up to Breiviknuten, the last narrow meters to Nordlandsnupen was not so tempting to do with my dog, but I was more than satisfied with the amazing views from Breiviknupen.

Best of all… my dear dog reminded me once again of why I actually love hiking,.. to relax, enjoy and take in the moment you are in.

NORDLANDSHAGEN

After the last hike we had some extra time for disposal (before we had to queue up for the evening ferry back). We drove along the absolutely adorable Nordlandshagen just to take in the idyllically and peaceful surroundings here in the afternoon sun.. a little peaceful paradise at the end of Lofoten indeed.

GOD TUR!

White frost river

Winter wonderland is here! Every day is full of beautiful frozen creations of nature – where dull and grey trees, branches and bushes are getting a revamp draped in new crystallized icing suites, looking their very best ever…

I know I should have used a tripod for better focus, but hey…have you ever tried to shoot at a steeper place… with a happy super energetic puppy on a leash?winter wonderland landscape ice frost waterfall norrland trail north sweden nature

Shot some frosty photos from one of me and puppy’s most visited walking areas. Near the waterfall and river the white frost and “cake icing” was covering almost everything – it just looked so darn delicious …or maybe I was just having a serious sugar craving 😀

This is absolutely one of me and puppy’s favourite time of year – not much snow yet, and not too cold either (-12 to -18 °C  in my area), so no frozen camera fingers or toes yet 😀  But I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before it’s getting serious and winter hell is on ..oh,my…

Here it was a lil’ bit steep, and I didn’t want to fall in to the ice-cold water. Puppy had to wait while I climbed down by the fence to shoot… so cool effect with the brown river water against the white frost and ice…

Chill-out in the chill

For days the car did a frozen silent protest, in minus 24 degrees it just refused to start at all, and in addition to this my dear cross country skis suddenly denied to go forward, they simply had hair-raising days not suitable for frozen ski tracks … can’t fight the chill, then chill down..

Sure, I felt a bit disappointed and COULD have gone for a run or two …or a freeeezing bicycle ride (hell no!) .. but for once I chose to just chill it for days… and do other stuff that was screaming for attention, to be fixed or cared for, in slow motion. ..  and to just potter around indoor in our warm and cosy home… I still had to go outdoor now and then to quickly walk the dog and carry lots of firewood etc, so no panic ..like taking the bad with the good..ish.

One of my favorite spots along the 10 km skiing track by the rivervinter landskap örnsköldsvik skitur cross country skiing

My lil’ “secret” is that I am actually rarely or never bored in my own company, there are a billion things I am up to and want to do – when the MUST-DO’s are done.  I can’t entirely understand people who often get bored … just a lil’ lack of curiosity, creativity and inventiveness? I mean… holy moly – think about all that stuff you CAN do in this world!!

skiløype cross country track winter wonderland norrland örnsköldsvik

..but of course you understand why these winter scenarios are great for both mind and body …  just have a look at these photos from skiing trips during last week… I have discovered this nice prepared ski track in Kubbe, not far from my home, and it usually stretches about 10 km (round-trip) along a river, and most important – it is allowed to bring dogs too!

A windshield/gapahuk along the ski track with firewood, fireplace and a nice view to the river .. and a lil’ red outhouse nearby with the classic red heart on the door.. if you have to go you have to go – no pee in the snow! 😀gapahuk shelter wind shield finsk lapphund snow landscape axe river bredbyn

…so now we are longer longing to get out there again .. no more worry that both my car and skis have died for good..  cuz today the temperature dropped to just -3!  ….and everything worked like a charm again… and we where of course back on (ski) track again today wiihaa! 😀

Madeira travel and hike

Yet another solo budget travel is recently done! Spectacular landscapes are affordable for all to joint if you use your head just a lil’ bit before booking your travel. I will very soon get back to you with some of my own advice for inspiration when you want to save money when travelling… cuz most of us want to go – but think we can’t afford!

I had a relatively impulsive visit to beautiful Madeira in Portugal, and of course it was the spectacular nature and outdoor activities that allured me to choose this green, mountainous and steep island… but in the end I think that also all the people you meet on your travels sum up at least half of the total travel experiencesolo that is.

portugal-pico-arieiro-madeira-sunset-photo-liss

Hike/vereda from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo (Madeira’s highest point at 1862 masl.) and back. I often read the advice to start early, but if you want this awesome sunset above the clouds, have the whole hiking trail return from Pico Ruivo for yourself (didn’t meet a single soul on my way back) and enjoy the marvellous afternoon light – I can suggest you start a lil’ bit later! This hike is absolutely awesome!!

Have a look at magic moments in my Madeira shortie:

k

The magnificent hike around Ponta de São Lourenço  – I did twice – it was so beautiful and powerful to both feel and see the nature forces and cool geological formations. Make sure you have a chat with one of the park rangers if you want interesting information about this area.

Ponta de São Lourenço – the hike that will seduce you to come back several times during your stay

l

There are plenty of awesome and scenic hiking trails/levadas, mtb/downhill/road biking and other outdoor activities to do here… so for me just 1 week was not enough to carry out all I wanted to do… it is easy to forget that you WILL need a resting day or two if you hike/bike/move a lot around on this  island – the steep hills are not for the faint of heart!  ..  or am I just looking for another reasons to go back?! ;D

When you hike around the island observing all the peculiar formations and weird plants – you probably can’t avoid thinking (if you are of the curious type like me) how all of this came into being. Tick off a day/half day, and take the bus (takes several hours one way) to visit São Vicente with it’s volcanic Caves and Volcanism Center to learn more about the island. And also enjoy breathtaking views when the bus are zigzagging up/down the roads passing Encumeda.

When leaving this island I was filled with new energy, got my inner strength back again…and best of all – happy as a lark! Much thank’s to the wonderful nature experiences – but also all the wonderful people I met – you really made my travel awesome! Obrigado(a)!
