Tinn in Telemark

A lot has happened since last blog post, it sure is time for a quick update. Me and puppy are currently living a nomad-ish life alternating between Norway and Sweden. I also have access to a cosy mountain cabin (about 750 m.a.s.l) in Telemark, Norway based at the very foot of Hardangervidda, so me and puppy naturally tries to be here as often as possible.

Tinnsjå lake view

Hopefully I will be able to show you more of these wonderful landscapes, interesting places and exciting war history and heroes a bit later, but before all ice has melted and revealed the myriad of hikes and nature’s beauty, me and puppy will soon be travelling far north in Norway for the summer’s seasonal work.

The closest city is Rjukan, about 50 km drive from the cabin. I sure admire the beautiful building of Såheim water power station near the Måna river  ..yes, we do like the power of water ..remember?

Gjuvhovd quickly became a favorite hike, it’s a short and easy accessible trail to get a superb view over the big lake Tinnsjå and towards the beautiful Gaustatoppen on the other side.

Ryes vei is a very nice serpentine trail hike with 21 “tornanti’s” and reveals some great views – starting from Rjukan city, you will end up at Gvepseborg at the very foot of Hardangervidda. Alternative you can take Krossobanen sky tram up and mountain bike down. (More about these places later my friends).

Happy winter days indeed we had – this awesome cross country skiing track starts just down the road from our cabin.. kind of ski in-/out-ish…makes it so easy to just go for a cardio, no car transport needed to get on track

Up here we admire deer, foxes, badges, hares,  weasels and birds right outside our cabin windows, think we both adore the silence up here too, only “interrupted” by a sweet lullaby from the two melting mountain streams near the cabin, and of course, the wind in the high treetops – this is so good for the soul!

At the cabin me and puppy are waiting for the snow to melt so we can show you some of the best hikes and interesting places in the area – grab a hot cup of tea and have some patience please… it will take some time to melt and dry up… in meantime puppy loves to sit out in the snow for a frozen ass …

Looking forward to show you more beautiful landscapes and exiting places and activities from this area ..so drink that cup of hot tea and don’t go to far away dear readers 😀

In the mountain area above Tessungdalen vally, the wild reindeers occurres from time to time. Would love to see them one day. What I do see is that the mountain grouse population here are really boiling.. they pop up from everywhere!

New paths of life

A new year is here, and new challenges are waiting. Planning and preparing has occupied my mind and doings during the last couple of months, as new and unknown directions are waiting for both me and my son soon. It will not be easy for any of us, but necessary. Hopefully we will be able to see 2019 as a fun, exciting and developing year of adventures… to share with you!

Now, I just wanted to make a quick post to say I’m still here and to wish you all a Happy New Year and show some photos of what me and puppy are doing outdoors these lovely winter days.skitur cross country skiing winter track lapphund

We really enjoyed a cosy, calm and white Christmas – with a Christmas mix dinner of Norwegian and Swedish traditional food on the table. My mom sent me some local Norwegian pinnekjøtt, so I first had to soak it for 24 hours, git’out in the forest to cut down and prepare some birch sticks to steam the meat for 4 hours on – a lot of work, but oh my so T-A-S-T-Y!

And we are of course enjoying cross-country skiing as often as possible as long as there are a fairly cover of snow on the ski tracks. Not so much snow here this year as last winter..
(thank God for that…)

See you soon with more hiking adventures my dear readers!

Crochet reflection dog vest and sporty messy bun beanie

Of course I crochet something for Her Sweetness too..  and some of my first “creations” was this reflective dog vest that would do good when we have to walk near traffic. She is already the sweetest thing ever, so I think the super cute neon pink colour from Galaxy reflex yarn looks good on her and sure makes her more visible in daylight too. Everything to make her safer.

For myself I wanted to try crochet a messy bean in similar colours to match her, but not so “neon” – so I choose a milder and thinner wool mix yarn from Viking of Norway. Too keep it warm and wind resistant I lined it with some stretch fleece. It sure feels great to put up my long hair in a bun or pony tail while exercising…

Cross country skiing with my new messy bun beanie – nice to get the hair away from any zippers… and so awesome when the cold wind bites. The fleece lining handles cardio sweat real nice too.fleece lined messy bun beanie lcap crochet winter sport

We are visible… here we are out for an evening walk testing if the blitz catches us ..it doez.. the reflex yarn are not supposed to replace an ordinary reflex, but rather compliment it…reflex dog vest messy bun beanie sport crochet

Dog vest pattern: As usual I shoot from my hip to get it the way I want it, so I mostly did this time too.. sometimes it works, sometimes not perfect but still ok (yeah, you noticed my clumsy rounding off at the back of the vest to didn’t you) …however, to get started with some good tips and tricks for the dog vest I viewed this video tutorial on Youtube, but I skipped the front leg holes as my dog don’t need the vest to keep her warm with all that thick lovely fur – it would just make her too hot.

Messy bun beanie pattern: Take a look here if you need a video tutorial to help you get started on a simple crochet messy bun. I really love to crochet the ribbed edge as it makes the beanie more stretchy around the head. I also did my very first surface crochet to decorate the beanie a bit.

If you should have any questions about these crochet pieces you are of course welcome to ask, and I will try to answer you the best I can 🙂

Absolutely adorable isn’t she…dog vest sweater reflex pink handmade crochet sweet

Chill-out in the chill

For days the car did a frozen silent protest, in minus 24 degrees it just refused to start at all, and in addition to this my dear cross country skis suddenly denied to go forward, they simply had hair-raising days not suitable for frozen ski tracks … can’t fight the chill, then chill down..

Sure, I felt a bit disappointed and COULD have gone for a run or two …or a freeeezing bicycle ride (hell no!) .. but for once I chose to just chill it for days… and do other stuff that was screaming for attention, to be fixed or cared for, in slow motion. ..  and to just potter around indoor in our warm and cosy home… I still had to go outdoor now and then to quickly walk the dog and carry lots of firewood etc, so no panic ..like taking the bad with the good..ish.

My lil’ “secret” is that I am actually rarely or never bored in my own company, there are a billion things I am up to and want to do – when the MUST-DO’s are done.  I can’t entirely understand people who often get bored … just a lil’ lack of curiosity, creativity and inventiveness? I mean… holy moly – think about all that stuff you CAN do in this world!!

..but of course you understand why these winter scenarios are great for both mind and body …  just have a look at these photos from skiing trips during last week… I have discovered this nice prepared ski track in Kubbe, not far from my home, and it usually stretches about 10 km (round-trip) along a river, and most important – it is allowed to bring dogs too!

A windshield/gapahuk along the ski track with firewood, fireplace and a nice view to the river .. and a lil’ red outhouse nearby with the classic red heart on the door.. if you have to go you have to go – no pee in the snow! 😀gapahuk shelter wind shield finsk lapphund snow landscape axe river bredbyn

…so now we are longer longing to get out there again .. no more worry that both my car and skis have died for good..  cuz today the temperature dropped to just -3!  ….and everything worked like a charm again… and we where of course back on (ski) track again today wiihaa! 😀

Winter Wonderland skiing Christmas

The latest days have offered absolutely super skiing conditions with sparkling sun, 7 -8 minus degrees and lots of snow everywhere. So this is how I will celebrate Christmas, cross-country skiing outdoors while enjoying this magic winter landscape ..together with my lapphund dog of course .. you know, gotta get out and workout after som delicious old-fashioned traditional Norwegian Christmas food (I will show you some more of it soon) 😉

Trying my very best to show you the magic I see out there… not that easy managing the dog, the camera and the cross-country skis at once with frozen toes and fingers – but it is absolutely doable if you want it enough ..ha..ha..vinter landskap fores winter landscape skiing scandinavia nature outdoors

My finnish lapphund dog Jenta is doing so well learning to run with a “skiing leash” – but sometimes she find it so much more easier (and smarter) to free-ride on my skis right behind my legs when the snow is too deep.. I fully understand her.dog lapphund cross country skiing skitur

Just stop, imbibe the view and silence – hoping that the wonderful feeling this gives will be burned-in to my soul .. this is my way of healing..

Now I want to wish you a lovely merry Christmas, I hope you don’t stress it too much… there are so many things we don’t need to celebrate Xmas.. enjoy what is most important in life.. deep down you already know what that is… see ya very soon folks… behave.. and drive carefully!

Cross-country skiing weekend

These days it feels absolutely right to replace my running shoes with a pair of cross-country skis now and then. There are plenty of snow up here now, so in addition to getting a lot of exercise shoveling snow in my court-yard and driveway frequent, me and puppy also gets outdoor for skiing in beautiful snow-covered landscape and strengthen our cardio further.

A favorite turnaround place for me and puppy – I absolutely adore this abandoned old cabin ..yesterday the mist started to thicken on the lake as you can see…and so did the chill..brrrwinter cabin frost lake skiing skitur längdskidor bredbyn örnsköldsvik nature

This weekend we just enjoyed the forest roads covered with lots of snow, I did my own ski track, which can be tough when you sink into the deep snow, on the other hand, I grew up skiing without any prepared tracks in Norway, and a big advantage is that Jenta can run freely here, so there you go..

Yes, I did a track here a couple of days ago, and made it so much easier to go skiing today, well, parts of it, as some lazy christmas tree hunters used it as a walking trail.. norrland winter wonderland landscape cross-country skiing skitur längdåkning längdskidor skiddpår track snow

A new challenge for us is also to get Jenta used to wear the expandable leash connected to me skiing … not an easy task indeed, but fully doable alrighty as she is talented.. I am the one who needs to get a grip on this ..ha..ha. I mostly let her run freely now, but when we want to get ready go to a prepared track where she will need to be leashed.

oh.. my happy face probable froze in the cold mist during a smile, but it could have been worse cabin lake bredbyn örnsköldsvik skitur lapphund kari traa cardio

Today I met 2 persons that also was skiing here, they thanked me for making the skiing track..ho..ho ..feels cool that someone helps out with the tracks here like they did.. Who knows, this place could become an alternative skiing favorite for people with dogs that don’t need everything prepped and glazed for a skiing trip.. or maybe not  .. anyway, see you later for moore skiing adventures...
